One thing that appears to be common is that when an archer is shooting from a really high stand and takes a broadside lung shot at a deer, he misses the near lung and only punctures the second lung. it was higher because he screened his calls and only went on ones that sounded highly likely that the deer was fatally hit. I talked to a friend who is a professional hunting guide and his rate with his dog for last year was 60%. In the book, the recovery rate with a tracking dog for arrowed deer was as low as 17%. I recently joined United Blood Trackers and found out why! They sell a great book called "Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer" and it discusses types of wounds, locations of wounds, and tracking deer shot with guns versus deer shot with arrows. It’s the nature of humans to argue these points. Mechanical vs fixed, brand vs brand, there’s always a healthy debate over who or what is the best. However, I myself always been partial to Grim Reaper broadheads. ![]() We had a horrible recovery rate for arrowed deer. JThere are seemingly hundreds of mechanical broadheads on the market today. I even wrote a simple little article that was published in the August 2000 GON. 10 years ago I had a blood tracking dog and was on the tracking dog list with my old Rooster.
